Umění je definováno jistým odstupem, který vytváří mezi umělcem a divákem, ať již ve formě rámu, neutrality galerijního prostoru, či svou spletitou historií, bez jejíž znalosti se snadno ztrácíme. Na druhé straně se umělec snaží o zprostředkování určité niternosti, pokouší se sdílet svou perspektivu našeho společného světa. Mluvit tedy o intimitě či odstupu, o blízkosti či distanci v umění vytváří nerozřešitelné napětí. Právě Islandské umění je tradičně vystavěno na tomto napětí. Přehledové studie stejně jako zahraniční výstavy si kladou banální otázku: Co je charakteristické a jedinečné na tvorbě islandských umělců? A poskytují ještě banálnější odpověď: je to distance a niternost, vzdálenost od evropské výtvarné scény je stejně formativní jako intimní sepětí s přírodou. Zdá se, že nikdo nepotřebuje nabourat jednoduchost tohoto výkladového klíče. Tvoří přitažlivou značku i jednoznačné vodítko porozumění.
Současná výstava, vznikající díky dlouhodobé spolupráci českých a islandských studentů výtvarných fakult, se nesnaží, i přes svůj název, ani pokračovat v těchto hranicicíh, ani se je nepokouší demytologizovat, či snad dekonstruovat. Pokud jsou příběhy o islandské distanci a intimitě smysluplné, pak je lze prožít jen skrze další zakouzlení, bez nároků na zobecňující, či estetické soudy. Dalším napětím je samotný průběh příprav této výstavy. Intenzivní kulturní výměna a vymíněná spolupráce představuje útok na svrchovanost umělcovy individuality. Je záměrným řezem intimitou, který ji podává vědomě a bez nadějí na hledání původní (přírodní) autenticity.
Intimita moderního umění tak neztrácí na svůdnosti, avšak ztrácí sebe samu. Jako vždy-již odhalená, interpretovaná, či uvozená historií je součástí veřejného a nikoli soukromého života. Intimita, která nemůže zprostředkovat niternost a sama se stává součástí spektáklu, nemůže být intimitou. Ledaže bychom ji chápali zásadně jinak. Nikoli jako prostor umělcovi a divákovi sdílené introspekce, ale jako čas ve kterém kondenzují širší problémy současnosti. Nejde o angažovanost umění, ani o výslovné dotyky se společenskými a kulturními tématy. Nejde o reflexi, jde o intimitu. Umění je vyymezeno svým ideálem, který si protiřečí. Je třeba vytyčit, zpřístupnit a rozehrát sféru intimity.

/en/ ELUSIVE INTIMACY

Art is defined be a certain detachment between the artist and the audience, be it in form of the frame around the canvas, the neutrality of the gallery space, or the complicated history of art – without which can easily lose our way. On the other hand, the artist tries to provide a certain proximity, to share his view of the world we share. Speaking about such intimacy or detachment, about proximity and distance in art creates an irresolvable tension.
Icelandic art is traditionally built on such tension. Both academic studies and foreign exhibitions thus pose the simple question: What is characteristic or unique for Icelandic art? And they come up with even simpler answer: Detachment and intimacy; the country's physical distance from the European art scene is just as formative as its intimate connection with nature. Nobody, it seems, feels the need to tear down the simplicity of this interpretation. It is an attractive label and a straightforward guideline for understanding.
Despite its name, this exhibition (the result of a long-term cooperative effort by Czech and Icelandic art school students), does not try to continue within these definitions, nor does it try to demythologise or deconstruct them. If these narratives of Icelandic distance and intimacy have any meaning, then they can be experienced only through re-enchantment, without any claims to generalized or aesthetic judgments. Another source of tension involved the very process of preparing this exhibition. Intense cultural exchange and forced cooperation represent an assault on the sovereignty of artistic individuality. It is an intentional incursion into the artist's intimacy, without any hope at finding one's original (natural) authenticity.
The intimacy of the modern art thus does not lose its seductiveness, but loses itself. As always, intimacy that has been exposed, interpreted or introduced by history is a part the public and not the private realm. Intimacy incapable of conveying inner feelings, instead becoming a part of the spectacle, cannot be intimacy – unless we understand it in a fundamentally different manner, not as a space for sharing introspection with artists and audiences, but as time that condense the greater issues facing the contemporary world. This is not a call for engaged art, nor for explicitly addressing social or cultural issues. The aim is reflection, but intimacy. Art is defined by its ideals, which contradict themselves. We must stake out, unlock, and warm up the sphere of intimacy.

První část vzájemné výměny zahrnovala pobyt českých účastníků, čtyř umělců a tří kurátorů v Reykjavíku. Součástí byly různé aktivity připravené sedmi účastníky islandské strany, studenty Islandské akademie umění (www.lhi.is). Kromě komentovaných prohlídek školy a města nám umělci, působící na Islandu často také v roli kurátorů a teoretiků, připravili konferenci na téma Kulturní průmysl a grantová politika na Islandu. Zajímavé příspěvky od antropoložky, ředitele islandské národní galerie či samotných umělců střední a nejmladší generace, včetně čerstvých absolventů školy, zakončila bouřlivější diskuse, zahrnující prezentaci českého prostředí (podrobně na další stránce). Větší část pobytu byla potom věnována poznání islandské výtvarné scény přímo v galerii Kaffistofa a dalších galeriích, z nichž některé měli v době pobytu vernisáže. Bylo tak možné seznámit se osobně s několika umělci či kurátory, kteří poskytli rozhovory pro videozáznamy, které budou zveřejněny na dalších internetových stránkách. Samotná příprava společné výstavy potom probíhala formou nekončících diskusí, a to jak v Reykjavíku, tak mimo něj v islandské krajině. Ta se také stala zdrojem inspirace pro české umělce, kteří část pobytu věnovali umělecké praxi a vlastní přípravě samotných děl.

PRAHA, 19.-29.10.2011

Pražský pobyt je naplánován již nejen jako příprava, ale zejména jako prezentace výsledků projektu s vrcholem v otevření společné výstavy dne 24. října 2011 v Galerii K4. Spřízněné fungování galerie s klubem K4 vedlo k naplánování několikadenního programu, zahrnutého do výročního festivalu Fluidum s podtématem "Intermediální most mladých umělců mezi Prahou a Rejkjavíkem", a tedy značkou "Intermost". Jeho součástí je představení české scény islandským hostům v rámci večeru projekcí, nazvaném tradičně Projektor, dále konference na téma Intimita nezávislých institucí s diskusí mezi nejmladší generací kurátorů a teoretiků z Prahy či vlastní performance připravené participujícími umělci pro širokou veřejnost. Jedna z nich se uskuteční v lesích na Zbraslavi, další v průběhu vernisážového večera. Islandští umělci si připraví také samostatný večer vlastních prezentací, zahrnující jak performance, tak projekce jejich audiovizuální tvorby. Součástí pobytu je také návštěva různých kulturních institucí v Praze a hlubší poznání české výtvarné scény.

The first artist exchange involved four Czech artists and three curators visiting Reykjavik. The program included various activities prepared for the seven participants by their Icelandic hosts – students from the Iceland Academy of the Arts (www.lhi.is). In addition to guided tours of the school and the city, the local artists (many of whom are also engaged in curatorial and academic activities) also organized a conference on the subject of "The Cultural Industry and Grant Policy in Iceland." The conference featured interesting presentations by an anthropologist and the director of the National Gallery of Iceland, by artists at the height of their careers, and by members of the youngest artistic generation, including recent art school graduates. The final, heated discussion featured a presentation of the situation in the Czech Republic (more information on the next page). Most of the visit was spent learning about the Icelandic art scene at the Kaffistofa Gallery and at a diverse range of additional galleries, some of which had opening receptions that week. As a result, the Czech visitors could meet with several artists and curators in person, filming video interviews to be published on another website. Preparations of the joint exhibition took the form of endless discussions both in Reykjavik and during trips to the Icelandic countryside – which formed a source of inspiration for the Czech artists, who spent a part of their visit making their own artworks.

PRAGUE, 19.-29.10.2011

The Prague portion of the project will involve not just the preparation, but also the presentation of the final artworks, culminating in the opening of a joint exhibition at the K4 Gallery on 24 October 2011. The fact that K4 functions as both a gallery and club led to the idea of a multi-day program as part of the Fluidum Festival, with the subtitle "An Intermedia Bridge of Young Artists between Prague and Reykjavik" (hence the name "Interbridge"). The program includes an evening of screenings with the aim of introducing the Czech art scene to our Icelandic guests, plus a conference on "The Intimacy of Independent Institutions" (which will include a discussion among some of Prague's youngest curators and academics) and performances created by the participating artists for the general public. One of these will take place in the forests of Zbraslav, while another will be presented during the opening reception. The Icelandic artists will also prepare an independent evening of presentations, including performances and screenings of their audiovisual work. They will also visit various cultural institutions in Prague and learn more about the Czech art scene in general.
